RECRUITMENT

"RUSH"- WHAT IS IT AND WHAT SHOULD I DO?

  • Rush is typically a period of 2-3 weeks at the beginning of each semester where organizations invite non-greeks to learn more about their sorority/fraternity. Events during rush can range from General Information Meetings to learn more about the history of an organization, Club parties hosted by the organization, or even a joint mixer with another sorority or fraternity so prospective members can engage others within the greek community to see if it would be a great fit for them.

AM I OBLIGATED TO PAY FOR ANY OF THE RUSH EVENTS?

  • No, Rush is free for every girl who attends. Alpha Sigma Rho sisters want to learn more about you and your interests, and there is no money or obligation in any rush events.

WHAT IS A BID?

  • A bid is a formal invitation to join the sorority. A bid does not grant you full membership as a sister of Alpha Sigma Rho, but it is a stepping stone in becoming a part of our sisterhood. In order to receive a bid, you must attend the required events established by Alpha Sigma Rho's chapter or associate chapter.

IF I ATTEND ALL RUSH EVENTS, WILL I AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE A BID?

  • No, you will not automatically receive a bid if you attend all rush events. It is important that during rush you begin to establish a connection and bond with sisters. If you are a bit shy, that is okay too! Just make sure you form a friendship with at least one sister so you can convey your strong interest for our organization.

WHAT MAKES ME ELIGIBLE TO JOIN?

  • After you have attended the events required by the sorority chapter or associate chapter and receive a bid, you will be eligible for membership in Alpha Sigma Rho Sorority. Along with receiving a bid, every individual should be a full-time student enrolled at the University in which Alpha Sigma Rho is established with a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.5 or higher.

IF I AM NOT A FIRST-YEAR STUDENT, WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO JOIN?

  • Of course you can still join! Membership can happen anytime during your undergraduate or graduate years during your studies.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS OF JOINING A SORORITY?

  • The costs of dues are dependent upon the sorority chapter or associate chapter you are joining. Every organization has dues that covers social events, sisterhood events, and national dues. Dues are in place to ensure that sisters can continue to bond and share in activities together.

IF I BECOME A MEMBER OF ALPHA SIGMA RHO, HOW MANY HOURS CAN I EXPECT TO SPEND PARTICIPATING IN SORORITY ACTIVITIES?

  • Your time commitment to Alpha Sigma Rho entirely depends on how much you want to contribute to the sorority. Some of our sisters are completely dedicated to our organization while some sisters choose to divide their time between our sorority and other things on campus. There are required events; however, you can always choose which events you can attend. The more time one spends with their sorority or fraternity, the more they will get out of greek life.

WHAT IS YOUR POLICY ON HAZING, DRUGS, AND ALCOHOL?

  • University policy, state laws, and our sorority does not condone any physical or emotional hazing. Alpha Sigma Rho also does not condone the use of drugs and underage drinking. If you are experiencing any form of hazing, please contact our National Board immediately for disciplinary actions.

HOW WILL MY GRADES BE IMPACTED BY JOINING A SORORITY?

  • Joining a sorority and being a full-fledged member can be time consuming, but your grades will not have to suffer. All active members have dedicated study hours to ensure that each sister are performing at their best academically. Becoming a sister of Alpha Sigma Rho teaches sisters to manage their time effectively and wisely. Sisterhood is important, but we strongly believe in academic excellence above all. You will always have a study buddy as well; the perks of sisterhood.

RISK MANAGEMENT POLICIES

ANTI-HAZING POLICY

Alpha Sigma Rho Sorority, Inc. enforces a strict non-hazing policy. Hazing is defined as “any act that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a person, embarrasses, frightens, or degrades a person or that destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership, in a group, organization or team,” and is against the standards of Alpha Sigma Rho Sorority as well as university policies and state laws. No new members or sisters will be subjected to hazing. National Board takes allegations of hazing very seriously. Any reports of hazing conducted by a chapter or associate chapter will be thoroughly investigated and subjected to penalties with possible suspension. The purpose of our new member process is to develop a bond between the new members and sisters as well as educating the new members about our history and traditions.

DRUG & ALCOHOL POLICY

Alpha Sigma Rho Sorority does not condone unlawful use of controlled substances and alcohol misuse and abuse by any of our members. Our new member process is a “dry” process, and we do not tolerate any alcohol and/or drug use by both new members and sisters.

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

Membership and all privileges, including voting and officer positions is extended to all students without regard to age, ethnicity, gender, disability, color, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
