PHILANTHROPY

Philanthropy is an essential part of Alpha Sigma Rho's purpose as an organization. We provide many opportunities for sisters to become involved in the community and we also encourage sisters to take philanthropic initiative within the community. Currently, Alpha Sigma Rho supports National Ovarian Cancer Coalition as our national philanthropic effort and each chapter or associate chapter hosts a week dedicated to our national philanthropy at least once per school year. Each chapter or associate chapter also has its own philanthropic services that we honor at the national level. We believe that through service, we can promote Alpha Sigma Rho’s value of sisterhood, diversity, and strength in unity.

September is Ovarian Awareness Cancer Month

"Teal is the awareness color for ovarian cancer and by displaying it across the United States, we hope to increase the public’s understanding about this deadly disease. Since there is no early screening test for ovarian cancer, it is imperative that al people recognize the signs and symptoms of the disease. Early detection saves lives.” - NOCC

Alpha Sigma Rho supports the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) as our national philanthropy. It was decided during Alpha Sigma Rho 2011 National Convention that ovarian cancer would become our national philanthropic focus, and we would align with the NOCC. More than 20,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year and unfortunately approximately 15,000 women will die from this disease. Due to a lack of early detection testing for ovarian cancer, most women are not aware that they have this disease until it has progressed to late stages. Since its inception in 1995, the NOCC has been committed to raising awareness of ovarian cancer, supporting women with ovarian cancer, and advocating for patients and caregivers that are affected by this cancer.

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and in honor of this month, all Alpha Sigma Rho chapters and associate chapters host Ovarian Cancer Awareness Week, in which sisters come together to fundraise for and educate the community about ovarian cancer. It is our hope that our efforts will help prevent women from having to suffer from this disease. This philanthropic service touches all our sisters as women, and we believe we can make an impact by educating each other and the community about this silent killer. Since adopting this philanthropy, Alpha Sigma Rho has raised over five thousand dollars for the NOCC.

Other than our national philanthropic efforts, our chapters and associate chapters also have their own local philanthropies that are supported within their community. Giving back to the community in which our sisters live and study is a core pillar of this Alpha Sigma Rho. Not only do philanthropic efforts help others, but it also builds sisterhood and character through leadership. ASR encourages all chapters and associate chapters develop their own regional philanthropies. Each chapter and associate chapter has multiple philanthropic services that can be viewed under our chapters and associate chapters section. Below are just some featured philanthropies that our sisterhood supports.
